Bell pull (rope) which was not connected to a bell.
Ventilator into an adjoining room instead of outside.
Saucer of milk (but they kept no cat or other small animal)
Small dog lash curled on itself and tied to make a loop of whipcord.
Bed clamped to the floor so that it could not be moved.
