Prendergast was a man of good family and great ability, but of incurably viscious habits who through fraud had obtained huge sums of money from leading London merchants. It was a sum of nearly £250,000.00. The leader of the mutiny which resulted in the escape of Trevor and Beddoes and the destruction of the ‘Gloria Scott’.
